EVACUATION ROUTE

Looking to the sky, an orange ball
takes a picture of itself and the sun
hangs above the waves that break
bigger than usual today, knowing
a hurricane swirls strong out there
down the coast, off Florida’s shoreline.
The threat has been made,
by Wednesday it will be here
joining you on your vacation and
you knew one day this would happen.
Now you think about those road signs,
labeling the road, an unmistakable swirl,
a sharp white arrow showing the way
to safety, to the highway, to your home.
When you check the path on television,
the latest satellite images tell you
you’ve been spared once again
and how it’s turning back into the Gulf,
moving west to all the poor states
who don’t need it to come their way.
