I WISH THAT I LOVED DOGS

then I could bring my puppies
to the beaches of the Carolinas.
We would jump in the waves,
play catch with a bright green
tennis ball, sit on the shore
under a yellow umbrella with
magenta stripes on the edges.
If I liked dogs, we could walk
a mile or two in the wet sand,
I would reach out and touch
the slippery pilings of the pier
to make it official, before turning
back to our vacation home.
If I only loved dogs,
I could call them, “my babies”,
and tie red and blue bandanas
around their little furry necks.
I’d name them Milo and Otis,
Amos and Andy, or Bud and Lou.
As they chased after the sandpipers,
splashed each other in the water
in the early morning sunrise,
I would remark to myself,
how life is really good, right now.

Excellent indeed, you captured the joy of owning dogs. I have only been near any beaches a few times in my life, but could feel the slippery pilings, and the wet sand.

Red bandannas and fury necks, yes life would be so good to share with with Milo and Otis or whichever name would be chosen.
