FEBRUARY

He mumbled under his breath with
each shovel of heavy wet snow.
He cursed the fact that he lived in a
state with overcrowded neighborhoods,
friggin’ crazy unpredictable weather.
One day it’s snowing with a wind chill
of 15 degrees, the next day it’s 55.

He raised his middle finger to the sky as
thick flakes fell on his head, fogging up
his glasses, soaking his hood and hat.
All those layers, all that lifting, made
his lower back and chest drip with sweat.

He told his wife that he couldn’t stand it
much longer, mentioned again that they
should consider moving to a warmer place,
not Florida, but maybe Texas or South Carolina.

Today, it was different when he woke up
and pushed aside the living room curtains.
This snow day was nothing like the rest,
just too damn perfect for him to believe.
Trees looked like they were dipped or
coated in cake frosting, snow clung onto
the limbs, the picket fence, the shrubs.
Not a flake was out of place this morning.
Several cardinals flitted branch to branch,
redder than ever in all the whiteness.

The power of all this beauty at once hurt
his chest and made a tear form in the edge
of his eye as he fell in love with the fallen
snow for the first time since his childhood.
Back when it was pure, untouched, unspoiled
as it covered the backyards with no fences
and made him wonder where it was that he
left his rubber boots. It was a time in his life
when everything seemed all right in February.

I love this...being from NY (now in the south) I know how it can be shoveling and driving in the snow ....but the beauty of untouched snow is really unmatchable by anything else.

Lorenzo, well done. It is all attitude. I loved the snow this year because in our town it was too deep to go anywhere and I was prepared at home. Even the electrical behaved in my neighborhood, out only about three hours total.

If only I could look out at the 3 feet dirty snow berms and feel that way. I know how this guy feels. I have a love/hate relationship with snow. But I love the northwest and I'm still happy we made the choice 15 yrs ago to live here.

Have a terrific weekend.

I understand. The only difference is I live in Florida where summer time is unbearably hot and I dream of my home in the foothills of NC. But then fall, winter and spring arrive and the days are so cool and comfortable, the sky so blue and being outside is such a pleasure. That's when I realize that Florida is not so bad except for a few months out of the year and heck-I can always head to the beach or pool or stay indoors with the a/c for companionship. I cannot help but miss the cold and the snow, and so when I see your beautiful photo, I cannot help but wish for retirement when I hope to travel back and forth and enjoy both. Ah!!!! May I live to see that day!!!

And so it is.
Life.
Winter.
I love it when it works to shift attitudes in a heartbeat. .. to walk to the Mirror (window) Look ( a little differently) Turn around and be in a different space......It surely must be no accident the the Month of love and deep seasonal affective disorder...is the month of February.

I love your stuff Lorenzo. You are such a realist romantic philosopher. I know I am becoming repetitive but hey there it is.You deserve any thing wonderful I can muster in words

I'm breathless - loved it!
I tell you what though - I think we'll need to change our ideas of perfection from now on. Things are going crazy weatherwise.
We've just had a record 48C or 118.4F in one of our southern states where 40 people died overnight in bushfires, and at least 400 houses were lost.
That's global warming for you!

Neat... I especially liked the bit where he was cursing and giving the sky the finger. Ahhh, what a relief to feel all that frustration ease in the final stanza!

Nature has a way of penetrating even the most frozen heart and touching it with her delicate beauty. I love red cardinals against the stark white landscape.
